Lamar Perry is a Queer Black director, producer and educator originally from Connecticut. In addition to working as a freelance director, he currently serves as an assistant professor of graduate directing in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Perry brings a unique perspective to his new role as an associate producer for The Old Globe theatre and feels strongly about his responsibility as a creative.

“Providing people with the opportunity to tell their stories from their lens, particularly those who have been traditionally marginalized in the American theatre.”

For Perry that means carefully choosing works that are diverse and inclusive. He also has an understanding that a place like The Old Globe should be a place everyone feels welcome and seen.

The Old Globe announced Wednesday the appointment of Lamar Perry and Kim Montelibano Heil to the new positions of Associate Producer. (Barry) Edelstein said in a statement. “Lamar is a gracious and warm presence, a deep thinker, a resourceful problem solver, and a voice of conscience in our ongoing social justice work. Kim is a leading figure in our local theater scene and will bring a range of skill sets and a rich sensibility to our artistic operations. I’m proud and pleased to have these talented and passionate theater makers in key positions at our theater. They make the Globe better.”

Perry was the writer and producer of the Globe’s first podcast, “Gather Round!,” and he produced the inaugural “An Evening with the San Diego Black Artist Collective” in 2020. He previously served as producing associate at The Classical Theatre of Harlem.

Roundabout Theatre Company Announces Second Annual Roundabout Directors Group

Roundabout's Associate Artistic Director Jill Rafson and Associate Artist Cristina Angeles lead the group with the mission to create an artistic community for directors at similar stages of their careers.

The cohort will begin meeting this fall to connect with established theater artists to offer mentorship and workshops on topics ranging from leadership during a global pandemic, the transitioning from assisting to directing, directing for TV/Film, understanding SDC, to self-producing and finding representation.

The second Roundabout Directors Group cohort includes Galia Backal, Abigail Jean-Baptiste, Sivan Battat, é Boylan, Miranda Cornell, Ryan Dobrin, Danilo Gambini, Raz Golden, Cara Hinh, Carsen Joenk, Lamar Perry, Jenna Rossman and Julia Rufo.

Perry started out as an actor, and was inspired to create new spaces for marginalized artists after facing challenges in the industry. “I got into directing and producing mainly as a way to not only have a seat at the table, but to create new tables and dismantle rooms, pipelines, and hierarchies that have traditionally asked Black and brown people, women, and queer folk to silence themselves for the sake of employment,”.
